I visited Lilly Bridge over Clear Fork River in Morgan County, TN just west of Wartburg on May 20, 2007. This place is incredible! The first thing I saw was a small brown butterfly with white lines feeding on a flowering Ninebark shrub. It tunred out to be an Eastern Pine Elfin, a life butterfly. The Ninebark was common along the river- all of it in bloom along with a plant I have only seen once before- Fringe-tree. Fringe-tree was also common in this location. Sweetshrub or Calycanthus was common and in bloom. The leaves were not hairy suggesting it was Calycanthus floridus variaty glauca. The flower on the plant was different from the sweetshrub photos in the flower guides. The flowers were yellow instead of reddish-brown. Cumberland Rosemary was found to be common in a rock bar. They are currently not flowering. They did not smell of rosemary but did taste like rosemary. Leatherwood, Arrow Wood (Viburnum dentatum), and Viburnum cassinoides or nudum were also common. There was a few woody plants I could not properly identify due to the lack of time so a return trip is in order.
