Not rare or uncommon, but I wanted to mention that a juvenile Least Sandpiper
is working the mudflats at Quack Quack Pond (aka Butterfly Lake, Colonial Pond,
etc.) in South Knoxville. The bird is small but so's the pond, so there
shouldn't be any problems finding it. That said, the bird seems to prefer the
far end of the water so you may want to bring a spotting scope, a good pair of
binoculars, or a powerful camera if you want to see any detail. I should also
mention that its legs are completely blackened by mud; as such, there is no
visible yellow (which is often a diagnostic characteristic of this species and
thus helpful in ruling out similar species). Also about the pond are a few
Killdeers, two Spotted Sandpipers, a Solitary Sandpiper, and a Great Egret.
Warning: Be sure to keep an eye on the many domestic ducks and geese here,
which run amok looking for handouts and occasionally eat human flesh.
Have fun!
