There was a juvenile Laughing Gull and a basic (winter) plumaged American Avocet sitting with about 2 dozen Ring-billed Gulls along the shoreline of Douglas Lake just opposite where Rankin Hill Rd. T's into Route 32/25E this late morning (Thurs. 8/26). The Laughing Gull I believe I saw earlier in the morning at Rankin Bottoms flying high overhead heading SW although at the time I could only get binoculars on it and see that it was a Laughing/Franklin's-type, neither of which I really expected to see there. Both birds eventually flew off with the Laughing heading south out over the lake and the Avocet actually putting down on the water out in the middle of the lake with most of the Ring-bills. Highlights at Rankin included 2 adult White-rumpd Sandpipers by themselves at the very south end of the bottoms. Other shorebirds included 40+ Killdeer, 5+ L. Yellowlegs, Semi Plover, 2+ Semi Sandpipers, 4 Least Sandpipers, 2 Spotted Sandpipers. Other birds at the bottoms were Prothonotary Warbler, Scarlet Tanager, Pileated Woodpecker, 70+ Great Egrets, Black-crowned Night-Heron, Black and Turkey Vultures, and 2 Osprey. I later checked out Panther Creek State Park on the other side of I-81 to the north and came across a few nice groups of songbirds that included Summer Tanager, Wood Thrush, Veery, 2 Black-and-White Warblers, Canada Warbler, 2 Hooded Warblers, and American Redstart.
