May 6-7, 2006 Mt. Orange (3 miles sw of Trenton) Gibson County, TN I had some nice migrant movement in the yard over the weekend. The best bird was late yesterday afternoon when I discovered a Lark Sparrow in the edge of the yard near the road. It flew out of the yard across the road into (you guessed it) a corn stubble field. I saw the bird on the edge of the road as I was turning in my driveway and as it flew I noticed the white outside tail feathers. My first thought was Vesper Sparrow but when I put the binoculars on it I was pleasantly suprised to find out it was a Lark sparrow instead. A nice new addition to the yard list! I had two other new yard birds over the weekend as well - a singing Nashville Warbler late yesterday afternoon in the company off a Yellow Warbler in the big Green Ash tree out front and on Saturday a Warbling Vireo was singing in the big Black Oak out back. Bobolinks are abundant in the surrounding wheat fields and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks are steadily moving through. Dickcissels are back in force and the songs of Indigo Bunting, Orchard Oriole, Summer Tanager, and Blue Grosbeak can now be heard daily. Chuck-will's-widows have been back for a couple of weeks now and are being heard almost every evening at dusk. Birds are on the move - get out & see what's around!
