There was a Lapland Longspur among a dozen Horned Larks this morning (Sunday, Nov. 11) in southern Cumberland County. It flew up and around a corn stubble field on Ted Davis Road at the intersection with Dunbar Road (a couple of miles south of Lake Tansi). While a bit far away, in the two flights it took over a 10 minute period it gave a dry rattle call occasionally (and once gave a "tew" call). It was slightly smaller than the larks and had white outer tail feathers and a brown back (seen once with a flash of chestnut). I hope to get more satisfying looks in the coming few days. Several Horned Larks were also on the other side of Dunbar Road (where I parked) in a horse pasture with a number of Killdeers and meadowlarks. Nearby Lake Hiawatha (just north of Lake Tansi) had about 500 Ring-necked Ducks, a Redhead, and a pair of Am. Wigeon. Lake Tansi had 10 Horned Grebes and 3 Double-crested Cormorants (both new for the season for me there) along with 2 Common Loons, 75 Ruddy Ducks, 18 Buffleheads, 400 Am. Coots, and 12 Pied-billed Grebes. -Ed LeGrand Cumberland County =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
