I attended the KTOS outing to Kyker Bottoms this past Saturday morning (Blount Co.). The weather was mild, rising from 42 to 58 before we left. The pools were full from the recent rains, and the ducks took good advantage of them. There were easily over 1,000 water birds seen between 8 a.m.-11 a.m. Charlie Muise flushed a BARN OWL from the gray barn across the lane from the wetlands. Charlie and David Trent also saw a male Northern Harrier and heard a Great Horned Owl before I arrived. The rabbit hunters, who didn't disturb the ducks as much I expected, flushed out about 10 Quail. Two red-winged blackbirds were establishing their territories, while the chickadees sung their sweet spring songs. I saw 4 species of sparrow: song, field, swamp, and a great view of a Savannah. Here are my rough estimates for what we saw: Bufflehead 4 American Black Duck 30 Ring-necked Ducks 20 Wood Ducks 4 Gadwall Canada Geese, 50 Mallards, several hundred Hooded Mergansers 4 Northern Pintails 20-30 Northern Shoveler 40 Green-winged Teals 40 American Wigeon 10-20 unknown Accipiter Red-tailed Hawk 2 Killdeer 2 Snipe 2 Rock Pigeon 1 Barn Owl 1 Downy Woodpecker 1 Eastern Phoebe 2 Blue Jays 5 Carolina Chickadees 8 Tufted Titmouse 2 Eastern Bluebirds 6 Northern Mockingbirds 2 Yellow-Rumped Warbler 2 Northern Cardinals Song Sparrows 25 Field Sparrows 10 Swamp Sparrows 5 Savannah Sparrow 1 Red-winged Blackbird 2 Robin Barrow Knox Co. =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
