UTPSF marsh was frozen over which is not typical. Also prior to that we had the
incredible drought which probably played a roll in no Sora/Virginia rail. We
also had crow hunters blasting shotguns & loudly playing Crow/Great Horned Owl
calls from the bank of the farm. We missed Pine Warbler which is almost a
guarantee at that location. We only had one or two species of duck. Really slow
day overall

The Knoxville CBC was held on Sat, 31 Dec 2016. I'm still compiling
individual totals but, unless I've miscounted, the species total is 98
plus 6 additional count-week species. This total is in-line with recent
trends matching our 10-year average of 97.6.
Participation was excellent as always, and I want to thank all that helped
with the count. Weather could have been better with mixed precipitation
throughout the day. Many parties reported seemingly low numbers of birds.
Some highlights...
- Greater Scaup (this has been a good year for them on Ft Loudoun Lake)
- Osprey at semi-regular wintering spot on Melton Hill Lake in Solway
- Merlin, 2
- Rufous Hummingbird
- all 7 woodpeckers
- Fish Crow and Brown-headed Nuthatch continue to increase in number and
both will likely set new record high counts (definitely Fish Crow)
- 4 warbler species including 2 Orange-crowned Warblers coming to suet
feeders (ties record high count for OCWA set last year)
Several good count-week birds which could not be found on count day or
showed up the next couple of days:
- ROSS'S GOOSE, first time on this count though we have had a few near misses
- Common Goldeneye
- Greater Yellowlegs
- Dunlin, the well-reported bird that showed up at UT Cherokee Farm a
couple days after the count
Some misses:
- Lesser Scaup and Barred Owl were CW only
- Ruddy Duck
- N Harrier
- Am Woodcock, weather did not cooperate for displaying
- Loggerhead Shrike, 4th year to miss this species at what had been the
last known spot for it in the count area
- Am Pipit, shocking miss (only 3rd miss in last 20 years) perhaps related
to the drought as the fields at UTPSF were reported to be dry and bare
- Pine Siskin
Also worthy of note is an Ovenbird that has been visiting a yard in
Knoxville which lies just 1 mile outside of the count area.
