Better late than never I suppose... The Knoxville chapter of TOS conducted the Knox County Fall Count on Sunday, 29 Sept 2013. Results below (please forgive the out-of-date taxonomy). On a related note, the Knoxville CBC will be held on Saturday, 4 Jan 2014. Please contact me offline if you would like to participate. Dean Edwards Knoxville, TN Notes: Participation (15 observers in 11 parties) was the lowest since 2001, in part due to a conflict with the TOS State Meeting. Species total (111 +3CW) is slightly below average for last 10 years (113). Highlights were a Henslow's Sparrow found by Tom Howe at the UT Plant Science Farm and 4 Fish Crows found by two parties, both firsts for this count. Other notable finds: Great Crested Flycatcher (late), Warbling Vireo, American Pipit (early) Notable misses: Barred Owl (increasingly difficult on Knoxville area counts the past few years), Common Nighthawk (CW only), Blue-winged Warbler, Nashville Warbler, Blue Grosbeak, Brown-headed Cowbird High counts (since 1997): Bald Eagle (tie), N Flicker, Cedar Waxwing, House Sparrow Low counts (since 1997): Black-and-white Warbler (tie) Knox County Fall Count Sunday, 29 September 2013 Total Species: 111 + 3 CW Total Individuals: 6161 Birds per party hour (ALL): 99.6 PARTY HOURS: by foot 43.03 by car 10.75 owling 0.50 feeder watching 7.55 GRAND TOTAL 61.83 PARTY MILES: by foot 36.15 by car 260.20 owling 10.00 GRAND TOTAL 306.35 Start Time: 6:15 End Time: 18:30 Observers: 15 Parties: 11 Weather: Low Temperature, F: 61 High Temperature, F: 71 Precipitation, in: 0 Wind Speed, mph: 2-12 Wind Direction: 235 (SW) AM Conditions: Cloudy PM Conditions: Cloudy Snow cover, frozen water, etc: None Relative humidity: 74 Barometric pressure, in Hg (sea level): 30.09 Pressure trend: falling SPECIES SWANS GEESE and DUCKS Canada Goose 159 Wood Duck 17 Mallard 27 PARTRIDGES GROUSE and TURKEYS Wild Turkey 25 GREBES Pied-billed Grebe 2 CORMORANTS Double-crested Cormorant 31 BITTERNS and HERONS Great Blue Heron 27 Great Egret 2 Green Heron 1 Black-crowned Night-Heron 1 AMERICAN VULTURES Black Vulture 4 Turkey Vulture 12 KITES HAWKS EAGLES and ALLIES Osprey 2 Bald Eagle 2 adult 2 Sharp-shinned Hawk 1 Cooper's Hawk 2 Red-shouldered Hawk 5 Red-tailed Hawk 11 CARACARAS and FALCONS American Kestrel 3 RAILS GALLINULES and COOTS American Coot 1 PLOVERS and LAPWINGS Killdeer 64 SANDPIPERS PHALAROPES and ALLIES Solitary Sandpiper 1 PIGEONS and DOVES Rock Pigeon 279 Mourning Dove 242 CUCKOOS ROADRUNNERS and ANIS Yellow-billed Cuckoo CW TYPICAL OWLS Eastern Screech-Owl 4 Great Horned Owl 1 GOATSUCKERS Common Nighthawk CW SWIFTS Chimney Swift 139 HUMMINGBIRDS Ruby-throated Hummingbird 13 KINGFISHERS Belted Kingfisher 17 WOODPECKERS and ALLIES Red-bellied Woodpecker 63 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 1 Downy Woodpecker 38 Hairy Woodpecker 7 Northern Flicker 53 Pileated Woodpecker 6 TYRANT FLYCATCHERS Eastern Wood-Pewee 29 Empidonax sp. 2 Eastern Phoebe 30 Great Crested Flycatcher 1 VIREOS White-eyed Vireo 10 Yellow-throated Vireo 2 Blue-headed Vireo 1 Warbling Vireo 1 Philadelphia Vireo 1 Red-eyed Vireo 4 JAYS MAGPIES and CROWS Blue Jay 368 American Crow 303 Fish Crow 4 SWALLOWS Tree Swallow 15 Northern Rough-winged Swallow 3 TITMICE and CHICKADEES Carolina Chickadee 118 Tufted Titmouse 72 NUTHATCHES White-breasted Nuthatch 20 Brown-headed Nuthatch 4 WRENS Carolina Wren 146 House Wren 3 Marsh Wren 1 KINGLETS Ruby-crowned Kinglet 2 THRUSHES Eastern Bluebird 103 Veery 3 Gray-cheeked Thrush 6 Swainson's Thrush 35 Wood Thrush 7 thrush sp. 2 American Robin 150 MOCKINGBIRDS THRASHERS and ALLIES Gray Catbird 59 Northern Mockingbird 127 Brown Thrasher 32 STARLINGS and ALLIES European Starling 713 WAGTAILS and PIPITS American Pipit 1 WAXWINGS Cedar Waxwing 264 WOOD-WARBLERS Golden-winged Warbler CW Tennessee Warbler 11 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Northern Parula 2 Yellow Warbler 1 Chestnut-sided Warbler 9 Magnolia Warbler 50 Cape May Warbler 1 Black-throated Blue Warbler 1 Black-throated Green Warbler 4 Blackburnian Warbler 5 Yellow-throated Warbler 4 Pine Warbler 5 Prairie Warbler 1 Palm Warbler 28 Western Palm Warbler 28 Bay-breasted Warbler 5 Black-and-white Warbler 2 American Redstart 29 Northern Waterthrush 1 Common Yellowthroat 23 Hooded Warbler 1 Wilson's Warbler 1 Yellow-breasted Chat 1 TANAGERS Summer Tanager 7 Scarlet Tanager 5 NEW WORLD SPARROWS and ALLIES Eastern Towhee 36 Chipping Sparrow 2 Field Sparrow 39 Savannah Sparrow 6 Henslow's Sparrow 1 Song Sparrow 63 Swamp Sparrow 2 CARDINALS BUNTINGS and GROSBEAKS Northern Cardinal 183 Rose-breasted Grosbeak 15 Indigo Bunting 136 BLACKBIRDS and ORIOLES Bobolink 1 Red-winged Blackbird 106 Eastern Meadowlark 10 Common Grackle 1296 FINCHES House Finch 40 American Goldfinch 60 OLD WORLD SPARROWS House Sparrow 62 OBSERVERS: Frank Bills Sharon Bostick Gail Clendenen Steve Clendenen K.
