Still several reports to come in but since Steve and Gail broke the ice,
preliminary results from the Knoxville CBC held Sat, 2 Jan are indeed duck-poor
likely due in part to the warm weather proceeding the count. A few good birds
were found along with most of the regular species to help with the species
total. Currently at 91 species but expect to add at least another 4-5 as other
reports come in. But missing some waterfowl will likely keep us under 100
breaking our recent trend.
Some highlights...
Susan Hoyle's crew was able to locate the lingering Yellow-throated Warbler at
the Cove at Concord Park (previously reported to TNBirds with photo by Colin
Sumrall).
The Clendenens and Ron Hoff's crew both found Orange-crowned Warblers. That's
a record high count and (with the expected Pine, Palm, and Myrtle) gives us
five warbler species for the first time.
I had Woodcock displaying at two of the four spots I checked and Colin Sumrall
added more at Haw Ridge Park. We may break the record for that species as well.
Sora at UTPSF (not open to public) reported by Tom Howe.
Pine Siskin and Purple Finch were found, but a staked out Rufous Hummingbird
will only be a count week bird as the homeowners were out of town, and it
didn't show during a couple of attempts.
We got the owl hat trick and swept the expected blackbirds (neither are always
easy on this count). We got several good species that have become regular
on this count including...
- 3 Great Egret and 20 Sandhill Cranes at Lackey Creek
- Brown-headed Nuthatches just about everywhere including 4 at the Knoxville
Municipal Golf Course by Merikay Waldvogel and Jerry Ledbettter which is a new
location as far as I know.
- Merlin by Mark Armstrong at Lakeshore Park
- 2 Fish Crows in Louisville

In the Walker Springs Park segment of our route, we had a Winter Wren, an
Orange-crowned Warbler and a Fox Sparrow. They were all found on the left
side of the paved trail which goes downhill from the kiddies playground,
within about 100 feet of the first metal bench.
Dean said that ducks were scarce. At Dead Horse Lake Golf Course, we found a
Gadwall, 8 Northern Shovelers, 2 Green-winged Teal, 18 Ring-necked Ducks and
2 Hooded Mergansers.
