This is really embarassing. After reading Mike Nelson's posting abut the birds he saw at Kingston Steam Plant 8/28 I began to suspect that I had mis-identified some of the Red-Necked Phalaropes I reported later that day. Mike saw two Black Terns. I now believe that the three small black and white birds that I saw distantly in the vicinity of the Caspian Terns were probably Black Terns. Shows the power of suggestion. I went there with the specific goal of seeing Red-Necked Phalaropes. I saw three small birds with the same black and white coloring, similar black markings on white faces, black caps, long body profiles, small pointed black bills. I immediately thought phalarope. I looked in my guide at the three phalarope species but didn't even consider terns. They were usually seen sitting but when I did see one standing it had short legs. I don't know how long a Red-Necked Phalarope's legs are but suspect they are not that short based on photos I have found today of other phalarope species. So, I definitely saw two Red-Necked Phalaropes and probably saw 3 Black Terns. Sorry. Carole Gobert, Knoxville _________________________________________________________________ Talk to your Yahoo!
