On our way down our precipitous driveway this morning, we were halted by a
persistent Scarlet Tanager, presumed immature male, trying to kill a Cicada.
The insect had lost a wing somehow and was buzzing around in circles on its
back. The bird was persistent for several minutes in trying to finish it off,
without much success. It refused to give way to the car, but eventually nipped
the head off the insect. Even then it refused to fly as we inched past. If we
had not needed to meet an appointment we would have been tempted to wait and
see the end of the story. Ralph and Kay Brinkhurst, Lebanon, Wilson Co.
