On our way back home from our NTOS field trip to Newton, Illinois to visit
the Greater Prairie Chicken lek, we had the delight of watching two
Whooping Cranes land in a waterfowl-filled transient pond in Christian
County, Kentucky. With a little homework, we found out these were two young
birds hatched last year: Crane #19-17 and Crane #25-17. Both of these males
were parent-reared and most recently wintered in Northeast Alabama.
The Whooping Cranes proved to be a joyous finale to a very fun weekend.
Besides the large number of waterfowl seen in and around Goose Pond near
Linton, Indiana, we had the pleasure of seeing Rough-legged Hawks in both
Illinois and Indiana. A little further south, we had a healthy number of
American Tree Sparrows and 50+ White Crowned Sparrows at Bluegrass FWA near
Evansville. We also had long, sun-drenched looks at MOST co-operative
Short-eared Owl at that same FWA.
Despite the cold weather, the birding is really starting to heat up!
