Dec 11, 2004 Knox County This morning, four brave souls ignored all the rain and mud and joined the KTOS field trip to UT Plant Sciences Farm. It actually stopped raining just prior to the 8am meeting time. Observers included Harold Howell, Alan Trently, Carole Gobert and Tom Howe. Thirty-seven species were recorded by about 11:30 am. Highlights included GREATER YELLOWLEGS, DUNLIN, and an adult BALD EAGLE. There was considerable flooding in areas which created the yellowlegs habitat. The dunlin were in the middle of the Tennessee River on some wood lodged in shallow water. The bald eagle was circling the river to the north and perched in shoreline trees on the north side for 30 minutes somewhere across from UT Medical Center. Our main target bird, Lapland Longspur, was not seen; however, one bird glimpsed among the Savannah Sparrows may have been that species but was too elusive amidst the soybeans. The total bird list is as follows: Double-crested Cormorant - 2 Great Blue Heron - 7 Canada Goose - 9 Mallard - 8 Bald Eagle - 1 ad Red-tailed Hawk - 1 American Kestrel - 1 Killdeer - 61 Greater Yellowlegs - 1 Dunlin - 2 Ring-billed Gull - 7 Mourning Dove - 71 Belted Kingfisher - 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker - 2 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - 1 Northern Flicker - 2 Eastern Wood-Pewee - 1 Blue Jay - 1 American Crow - 126 Carolina Chickadee - 2 Carolina Wren - 4 Marsh Wren - 1 Eastern Bluebird - 11 Northern Mockingbird - 2 European Starling - 170 American Pipit - 14 Yellow-rumped Warbler - 2 Palm Warbler - 9 Savannah Sparrow - 17 Song Sparrow - 10 Swamp Sparrow - 8 Northern Cardinal - 1 Red-winged Blackbird - 21 Eastern Meadowlark - 12 Brown-headed Cowbird - 2 House Finch - 1 American Goldfinch - 12 See you in the field !
