At our monthly meeting this past Wednesday, the Knoxville chapter of TOS passed a motion to sponsor Operation Migration Mile 574 in TN for 2008! Operation Migration (http://operationmigration.org/index.html) has played a leading role in the reintroduction of endangered Whooping cranes into eastern North America since 2001. In the 1940s the species was reduced to just 15 birds. Seven states, ~1285 miles, and an unknown number of migration days lie between the 2008 Whooping crane chicks’ fledging ground at Necedah National Wildlife Refuge in Wisconsin, and their wintering grounds in Florida.
