07.14.2006 My backyard in Perry County,TN What caught my eye as a possible turkey turned into much more... Yes, I thought that there might be a turkey flying from ground to tree branch, we used to see them here often until we moved the dog into her backyard spot. If the turkeys do come around, they don't stay long unless they move to the deep ravine where we've dumped 5 pounds of wheatberries for their enjoyment since we were too lazy to try and grind the wheatberries up for breadmaking. This flying creature was not a turkey, more of a body of a heron. While I was able to approach within 30 feet while it was on a branch of a tulip poplar, I couldn't quite make out its markings. The bird stayed long enough for me to go into the house and retrieve the binoculars. It was in fact a juvenile Yellow-crowned Night Heron, somewhat removed from water except for a good steady running creek across the highway and a couple of good fishing ponds a quarter mile down the road. We are high on a ridge in the upland woods, so I think the juvenile became a bit distorted. All the while the ticks were going CRAZY looking for blood!!!! Whenever I go to my compost pile to donate, I know I'm in for trouble, which calls for an immediate strip down and a good hot shower. I think Wallace Coffey's suggestion of using soap harkens to covering a tick with Vaseline in order to 'suffocate' it, both worthy of a try. Or, using a blown out match touched to their bodies in order to make them back out of the victim. Mine, I just rip them out ASAP, and am always checking for them since they seem to be so thick here from spring until fall.
