A Glaucous Gull standing in with Ring-bill would stand out like a sore thumb as it is almost three times the size of a Ring-bill. If the suspect is just larger than a Ring-bill then Iceland is far more likely. The Glaucous I've seen and photographed in with Ring-bills, stand head and shoulders above the crowd. Iceland Gulls are showing up a lot this year with one at Pace Point and another in north Alabama just recently. It would be hard for a Glaucous to hide even while sleeping in with standing Ring-bills. The large size of a Glaucous would stand out even in a flight of Ring-bills where an Iceland would not. Ring-bills average 520g , Iceland average 1,000g while Glaucous are 1,400g with males being even larger. Any chance as mentioned to study gulls in numbers is well worth your while. Gulls are a kick. Either of these two species in TN sure makes the day.................... Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
