The Jackson (Madison County) Christmas Bird Count was held on Monday, January
2, 2017. The temps were mild but viewing conditions were less than desirable
the entire day. The day started out pretty foggy with rains setting in just
before noon and continuing throughout the remainder of the day with fog coming
back in late in the day. Three observers (two in the field and one in
yard/feeders) covered the entire count circle. Poor weather plus a low number
of field observers added up to a well below average count.
74 species were tallied which is below normal. Highlights were few but included:
Greater White-fronted Goose - 14Red-breasted Merganser - 1Fish Crow -
1Red-breasted Nuthatch - 2Pine Warbler - 3Purple Finch - 4
Misses were too numerous to list.
Observers were Mark Greene, Beth Peterson, and Allan Trently.
Good birding!
