TN-Birders, Below is an invitation from Eric Soehren to come help dedicate the recently purchased "Walls of Jericho" in extreme n.e. Alabama and southern Tennessee. All are welcome. Steve McConnell Hartselle, AL Eric's note follows: The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, State Lands Division is hosting a dedication ceremony of the Forever Wild Walls of Jericho tract on Saturday, April 23rd at the walking trail parking lot on AL Hwy 79 (the northern most parking lot) north of Hytop. The event starts at 10:00 AM CST with 3 speakers followed by the unveiling of a sign officially dedicating the 12,510 acre tract to the public. Featured speakers include Governor Bob Riley, Conservation Commissioner M. Barnett Lawley, and AL TNC Director Jeff Danter. The ceremony will last about 30 minutes and will be followed by a field trip to the "Walls". If you plan on hiking in, please be sure to wear the appropriate attire and bring plenty of snacks and water. Also, don't forget your binoculars and camera! I'm sure you are all aware of the significance of this purchase in helping preserve our rich natural heritage. Many of our "declining" Neotropical migrants, including Cerulean Warbler, depend on this area for breeding/stopover sites. Please come and celebrate this conservation achievement with us. For those not familiar with the area, it is in north Jackson County, Alabama west of Skyline WMA. From Scottsboro, take AL Hwy 79 off US Hwy 72 to the site (about 1 mile south of TN line). From Winchester, TN, take TN Hwy 16 south into Alabama (turns to AL Hwy 79) for 1 mile. The parking lot is on the west side of the road and there is a big brown sign indicating parking. Those of you who subscribe to TN BIRDS, feel free to post. Hope to see you there.
