October 24-25, 2005 [posting date: October 26, 2005] While in Nashville early this week, I made a couple of observations that might be of interest to Davidson County birders, so I'm sending them along-- Indigo Bunting (on October 24, below the James Knox Polk and Sarah Childress Polk gravesite adjacent to the state capitol; this is one day later than I've observed this species in Greene County, and I suspect that it might be a fairly late date for Davidson County; in any case, it was interesting to find a fall Indigo Bunting in a thoroughly urban habitat; practically all the INBU I find in fall are in weedy fields, overgrown fencerows, or brush piles in rural areas); Common Yellowthroat (on October 25, below the capitol in a weedy patch no more than twenty feet from the railroad track near the intersection of 10th Avenue North and Nelson Merry Street; I wasn't surprised to find Song Sparrows, White-throated Sparrows, and Dark-eyed Juncos in this spot, but I was a little startled to find a Common Yellowthroat).
