Hi! I have recently moved to Smyrna, TN, and over the weekend, decided to check out a natural area close to my condo. The name of the area is Nice Mill Dam, and it is part of the East Fork River, backwaters of Percy Priest Lake, I believe. A path cuts through the area and follows East Fork closely so that you can birdwatch and be on the water at the same time. Anyway, on Sunday afternoon around 2:00 p.m., I spotted a Pileated Woodpecker, and got to watch it for several minutes, fairly close with binocs. The sun was behind me and it was putting the best lighting on this bird! Well, I noticed something I had never noticed on a P.W. before: a large patch of rust on it's wing. Is this an indication of a juvenile? I also saw a mature Cooper's Hawk on the prowl. It landed in a tree right above where I was standing and again, the lighting was perfect to see every marking! I'll definitely return to this area again for birdwatching!
