Good morning Birders,

At approximately 9:10 AM, an immature Cooper's hawk flew in and landed on a
deck chair about 20 feet away from me at my home in Charlotte Park, West
Nashville, Davidson County. It was raining lightly, and the bird stayed for
only
a moment before it flew into the grape vines then up into a tree behind the
deck. It stayed in the tree from which it watched the deck for about 15
minutes. The mice that feed here finally began to move around, and, fast as
fury, the young Cooper's flew down onto the deck, snatched one up and flew
back
into the tree where I assume it completed its kill and/or got a more secure
grip on it. After a couple more seconds, it took its little mouse morsel and
flew away with it. This young bird is still in VERY immature plumage. It was
too fast for a photo while it was on the deck making its catch, but I took a
few snaps of it while it sat very camouflaged among the leaves in the tree.
I really do love my "Immy Coops."

I had suspected that a hawk was around as all my feeding birds flew off the
deck in a hurry just a couple of minutes before the "Immy Coop" flew down from
the tree onto the deck chair. No birds have reappeared yet, so "Immy" may
be feeding on the mouse only a few trees away behind the deck. Since the
little mouse may only be enough for an "appetizer," the Cooper's may return
later looking for the rest of its meal.

Male hummingbirds are also giving me a thrill around here. They have been
feeding in the rain this morning.

Cheers & prayers,

Dee Thompson
