Jan. 9, 2010 Tunica Co. MS After much scanning at 2 day roost sites in Tunica Co. MS, I had a pale first winter gull come in to rest. The bird showed all the signs for an Iceland Gull but with limited looks and only one photo as the bird was flushed by a Harrier, can a variant Kumlien's be excluded? The primaries and tail were all pale with not noticeable marking on either. The tail was not darker nor showed any apparent terminal band. I'll be back in the area today trying for more photos. There are clouds of gulls using the landfill and resting in nearby fields. The landfill is closed on Sunday which may reduce numbers. Arkabutla Lake in plumb full of ducks and gulls along with at least 2 female Common Mergansers feeding near the south end of the dam. Gene and Shannon Knight reported that both Grenada and Enid lakes also have huge numbers of gulls pushed south by the COLD! The Iceland Gull was seen on the west side of Highway 3, south of the Landfill and north of Arkabutla Dam Road.
