Jerry,
If it was only that easy :") Male California can be larger than female
Herrings, with likewise differences in head shape and bill size. The really
prominent pale inner primaries is the clincher. It was most likely a Herring
all along of course, but seeing the open wings on this pair as young birds is a
great step in the right direction!

Thank you to everybody who responded to my gull question! It has been an
interesting discussion that has left me a little closer to being able to figure
things out. I went back this morning with hopes of getting underwing pics and
was successful, but in looking in my field guide I discovered something I had
overlooked. According to Sibley, a Herring weighs 2.5 lb, and a California
weighs 1.3. These birds were pretty comparable in size, ruling out that one
could be a Herring and one could be a California. I'm enclosing the pics
anyway, but its a moot point. Once again thanks for all the input and helping
me hone my ID skills.
