Alan Troyer, Victor Stoll and I spent the day in Humphreys County today.
We tallied 130 species without finding anything that’s actually rare.
The best birds included two Red-breasted Nuthatches on Beech Creek Road
(one with a nearly pure white breast) a flyover Merlin and two flyover
Herring Gulls in pool 7, a late Red-breasted Merganser, 23 warbler
species, good numbers of all four thrushes, three Soras, a Sedge Wren and
half a dozen Marsh Wrens in pool 7, ten shorebird species in pool 2
including two Long-billed Dowitchers, FOS Mississippi Kite, Lincoln’s
Sparrow, Dickcissels and Bobolinks.
Overall things are still slow and behind schedule around the Duck River
Unit compared to normal years, presumably because of the major floods.
