Hummer numbers should be peaking over the next couple of weeks, and then will steadily decline through mid-October when the last few stragglers head south. Keep a close eye out for a stray Rufous Hummingbird. We get a few reports each year in August. Usually, they are the rather obvious adult males (and typically only stay a day or two at most), but I suspect that there are a decent number of more subtly colored females and immatures that are overlooked among the masses of Ruby-throats. I often suspect that winter hummers that are first detected in late October were often present much earlier, but not noticed among the Ruby-throats. -- Chris Sloan chris.sloan@xxxxxxxxxxx Nashville, TN -------------- Original message -------------- Have our hummingbirds begun migration this early? The numbers I am seeing at one time have decreased. I'm seeing many more adult males - at least nine in one view this afternoon. Fewer females and immature males.
