24 July 2005
Carter County, TN
Pond Mountain

Rob Biller and I had an interesting hummingbird experience on Sunday, July
24th. We were riding across Pond Mountain (Carter County, TN - Hampton
area) and stopped at an area that I have always heard called the Miller
Fields. There was a lot of milkweed blooming and we were hoping to see a
few good butterflies. But instead, the area was "swarming" with
hummingbirds. There were easily over a dozen flying back-and-forth,
chasing each other, and being very noisy. All seemed to be females. They
were either nectaring or feeding on insects from the milkweed. It was like
watching an aerial combat among independent fighter jets. Very cool!
