So far this year, I have found 11 nests, 6 of which are currently active, around my home in Weakley County. Last week's unsettled weather (thunderstorms, strong winds, low temperatures, and heavy rain) was possibly a factor in some of the nest failures. Based on the location and timing of newly constructed nests, at least two of the females who lost nests are already re-nesting. I will give an update and more details about the hummingbird nest project (including suggestions on how to find hummingbird nests) at the Hatchie BirdFest next Friday (30 May) evening in Brownsville. Other Friday night festival activities include an opening reception, a silent auction, and music by the Dirt Pilgrims. For a schedule and information about the festival (including Saturday morning birding field trips, Saturday afternoon presentations by Tara Dowdy, Dick Preston, and Scott Somershoe, a Saturday afternoon butterfly and wildflower hike led by Allan Trently, plus vendors and exhibitors) that Bob Ford and crew have organized, please see the Hatchie BirdFest web site (hatchiebirdfest.com).
