WillieBoy is a "fussy" visitor. He came to the feeder this morning at 6:18 but just for a flyby sip. He returned six times in the next ten minutes but never sat down, just stabbing a few drinks and darting away. The presence of other birds spooks him. We've had a peanut butter log on the deck railing about six feet from the sugar water feeder for a couple of years and the wrens, downys, titmice, and chickadees visit often. We moved it to another area of the deck yesterday but a few of them are still coming to the old spot before finding it and WillieBoy likes to dine alone. He also doesn't like the heat lamp even though it is necessary on these bitter cold mornings. When the peanut butter seekers left and I turned off the heat lamp, he came at 6:28 and sat and ate for a long time. Children are hard to please sometimes. Maybe he'll get more accustomed to things if he stays a while. I've been cautioned about calling this bird a male Rufous until we have absolute confirmation by a bander, although one bander looked at the pictures I took and said he was almost positive it is a Rufous. Hopefully someone will be able to come this week and we'll know for sure.
