This morning around 9:35 a.m. I was at work but driving to my my employer's Holston Hills home in east Knox County to look through some files when I saw a large flock of blackbirds on a suburban lawn on Crestwood Drive. Crestwood is a quiet street, there was no traffic, so I stopped to check them out and was pleasantly surprised to find that a substantial proportion of the birds were Rusty Blackbirds. It was hard to get an accurate count as the birds were in constant motion, periodically taking off and flying to the next lawn. I counted up to 35 Rusties, possibly more, maybe fewer. I didn't attempt to count the other species but saw at least 2 female Brown-headed Cowbirds, at least 2 red-winged Blackbirds, perhaps 20 starlings and a large number of Common Grackles.
