At least 134 visitors from 17 states visited the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge in Meigs Co. at Birchwood today. Most were hoping to see the hooded crane, but for the second day since December 13 the hooded crane was NOT seen. Two juvenile whooping cranes were observed. Two adult and four immature bald eagles were seen at the point of the slough. The number of sandhill cranes seemed to have declined noticeably since yesterday, but there were still thousands at the refuge. First-time visitors from Idaho and Kansas boosted the number of states that have been represented in the visitor counts to 39, plus the District of Columbia. A visitor was present today from London, UK. Total visits to HWR since December 13 are now at least 2192. Charles Murray Birchwood, TN
