Cherokee Removal Memorial Park and Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge Birchwood, TN From the CRMP early this morning, I did not see a single sandhill crane. Later in the morning a few sandhills were seen in Rhea County and Meigs County. After 6 PM, however, around 2,000 sandhill cranes were sighted on mud bars in the Tennessee River near Hiwassee Island. I'm speculating that this huge increase in numbers of cranes during the day is due to migration of Florida and/or Georgia sandhills flying north behind a strong south wind.
