It was VERY windy late Monday morning when I spent a couple of hours viewing the Hiwassee Island area from the Rhea Co. Blythe Ferry landing. Earlier in the morning, a friend from Rhea Co. had reported very large numbers of sandhill cranes flying north. However, I saw less than 100 in the late morning. Also seen were two immature bald eagles and one fish crow. Several black vultures were feeding on a large dead fish in the edge of the water. Late in the day from the Cherokee Removal Memorial Park, I saw an estimated 400 sandhill cranes on the mud bars on and near Hiwassee Island. Normally, the cranes seem to "stay put" once they begin to "roost" for the night. On this evening, however, they seemed "restless" and most changed locations a couple of times for no discernible reason. One adult bald eagle was seen and numerous ring-billed gulls. I did not see the osprey today that I'd seen on the last three trips to the area.
