The annual Hickory-Priest CBC was conducted January 1st, as usual. This count includes portions of the two major Nashville lakes, J. Percy Priest and Old Hickory, in addition to Shelby Bottoms and Metro Center. Twelve people in four parties participated in this year's count, which turned up 89 species. Highlights included an EARED GREBE at Old Hickory Lake, two MERLINS at their traditional location at Anderson Recreation Area on Percy Priest Lake, and 6 SEDGE WRENS, a MARSH WREN, and two LECONTE'S SPARROWS at Shelby Bottoms. Significant misses included Eastern Screech-Owl, Eastern Phoebe, Brown-headed Cowbird and, per usual, White-breasted Nuthatch. I'm offering a sizeable bounty for anyone who can tender a plausible explanation for the annual absence of such a common woodland bird from an entire count circle on an almost annual basis. For those interested in looking for the Eared Grebe, the bird was in with a flock of 30 or so Horned Grebes just north of the beach area south of the dam (the area between the dam road and Snow Bunting Peninsula). The best viewing area is the parking area directly south of the dam, although the bird can also be seen from Snow Bunting Peninsula, which is the north-south road that leads out to a peninsular boat ramp just east and south of the dam. Its overall darker appearance and the longer, thinner, noticeably upturned bill are very apparent on this individual, of which I was able to obtain some excellent video. Thanks to those who participated.
