Reporting on behalf of Chris Mahoney who visited the Hiawassee Crane viewing
site today at Birchwood and saw:

21 Snow Geese (8 Blue with the remainder white transitional)-these birds
were observed across from the viewing site. This is a larger number of snow
geese than Chris or I can remember being at the refuge at least in recent
years.

Chris spoke to Richard Urbanik of US Fish & Wildlife who reported that as of
today, there are 9 whooping cranes in the Hiawassee area.

One of them was recently transported to the Hiawassee area by US Fish and
Wildlife. This is a DAR (Direct Autumn Release) bird that had strayed to far
west and was captured in Arkansas and released at Hiawassee. There are also
four DAR's of 2 years ago which are at the refuge now.

Chris also reports 4 Eagles sighted near the refuge and 2 others a little to
the north along the river.
