Thanks to the experience and generosity of Dale and Jeannie Swant, who provided the original report, the boat and some extraordinary refresments, on Sept. 5 Harry and Jean Yeatman, Ruth Luckado were treated to very close looks at a heron night roost on Little Elder Is. on Woods Reservoir*. We observed an estimated 50 Cattle Egrets, 10 Black-crowned Night-Herons, 8 Great Egrets, 6 Green Herons and a single Great Blue Heron using and coming to the island as a night roost. Some of the Cattle Egrets and Night-Herons have obviously nested there as well, as young of these species were heard to beg to be fed as adults approached. Also observed from our various achorages near the island were about 100 Blue-winged teal, 50 Double-crested cormorants, 25 Mallards, 10 Wood ducks, 1 Osprey, (another Osprey was sited as we left the Morris Ferry boat dock), and singles of Pied-billed grebe, Eastern kingbird and Carolina wren. The bird of the evening, however, (unless it was the late arriving Great egret who seemed to come directly from rising Mars!), was the quite early, immature Herring gull, who made repeated passes at the island, much to the distress of the egrets. On our way to the reservoir, the Yeatmans and I observed a large group (50?) of Eurasian collared doves near the H & D Feed Mill in downtown Decherd, just northwest of the railroad tracks and Hwy 50. *At 35 degrees 18'30"N and 86 deg. 3'45"W, this islet appears right on the fold between pp. 22 and 23 in DeLorme. __________________________________________________ I have been lucky enough to find an incredibly wonderful bird.
