Sevier Co., TN Swain & Haywood Co., NC During my forays along the Appalachian Trail over this holiday between Ice Water Springs and Mt Guyot, plus Clingman's Dome on June 26, I counted 42 singing Hermit Thrushes. There were count points every 250 meters, so the total distance covered was c. 10 miles. There were also many more heard during the afternoons while hiking from shelter to shelter. Considering there are roughly 35 miles of spruce-fir forests in the high elevations that makes for quite a few Hermit Thrushes. It was only about 4 years ago I heard my first ones near Mt Sterling. I haven't analyzed the data yet, but believe the thrushes were equally distributed on both sides of the state line. Get out and enjoy it!
