The Henslow's Sparrows at The Farm (Lewis County, near Summertown) were still singing their little flat green heads off this evening. Cynthia Rohrbach and I found 7 singing birds, several perched cooperatively in clear view. One of the singers allowed us to watch him leisurely from as close as about 5 meters while he tsi-licked away. We started looking around 7 p.m., at which time the birds were very vocal and conspicuous. Their normally weak and inconspicuous song carried surprisingly well in the quiet, calm evening air. Cynthia and others at The Farm are trying to develop a management scheme for their hayfields that will provide for both HESP habitat and hay production. Can anyone suggest some references that could help? How late in the season might the birds continue actively nesting?
