This is good news. Over the years we have released almost 75 Mississippi Kites
in the Henry County area, mainly in the Paris Landing State Park area. These
birds were some of the over 350 kites that came from Kansas Wildlife & Parks as
young birds to be released in the general area of the Mississippi and Tennessee
Rivers between Henry/Stewart/ Lake Counties and Shelby/Tipton/ Fayette
Counties. Hopefully this bird is one of those released or possibly an offspring.

Subject: [TN-Bird] Henry County: Mississippi Kite over our yard

Paris, Henry County
May 13, 2013

My husband had been birding around the yard for much of the morning
and had been getting quite a good yard day list going, but had not yet
seen any soaring birds. Just before we left for town at about 11:00,
he spotted a Mississippi Kite. He watched it dive out of site and come
back into view from close range, then I arrived and got on it with
binoculars to see it eating the prey while soaring. We had long, close
excellent views of the bird. This was only the second time we have
seen a Mississippi Kite over our yard... the first was in late July of
last year. Nor had we ever seen one anywhere else in the region where
we usually do our birding... Henry, Benton and Humphreys counties.

I see from ebird data that they are not common in this particular area.

We were thankful to get such wonderful views! What a strikingly beautiful bird!
