The last several times I have stopped at Hatchie NWR on my way through east an adult Bald Eagle has been present at ONeall Lake. About 2 weeks ago, I thought I was going to miss seeing it, but it soared in over my head at fifteen feet. On Friday, the 23rd, it was devouring a large sized fish while perched in one of the dead trees. If you are planning to travel Interstate 40 between Memphis and Jackson, TN; it is worth the 20 minutes needed to stop and look for it. There are always Bluebirds, Kingfishers, Cormorants, Pied-billed Grebes, Coots and a few surprises to be seen. Hatchie NWR is located on Rt.76 between Exits 52 and 56 in Haywood County. Be sure to suss out the mud flats and wading ponds.
