Happy New Year, everyone Last Thursday morning was a most memorable birdday for me. I spotted unusual movement and color in the leaf litter on the wooded hill beside my driveway and, try as I might, I could not make it resemble any of my usual cohort of winter yardbirds. Finally had to get a binoculars to discern who I was looking at: a Hermit thrush! First one I've seen in my winter yard since I moved here in '99. When I left for work a few minutes later, I decided to first drive the 0.2 mi to the all-weather spring and turnaround at the end of my road, and found 60+ turkeys down there, picking through the grass! WOO HOO!!! Outside of Cades Cove, I've never seen that many turkeys in one spot; the record in my yard is perhaps 12, maybe 15. How very, very pleasing to find that the surrounding woods and pastures will support so many this late in the year. My mind's eye (and heart) were very carried away by the image of a herd of thigh-high, warm-blooded, flying dinosaurs, slowly parading in unison. Definitely made my day.
