Fifty-one species were noted today at the Cherokee Removal Memorial Park (Meigs
Co.), Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge (Meigs Co.), my home in Birchwood (Hamilton
Co.), and Yuchi Refuge in Rhea County. Three FOY/FOS species were identified: A
calling Northern Bobwhite on HWR near the CRMP, a Prothonotary Warbler at Yuchi
Refuge, and a Summer Tanager at home. A few other noteworthy species found were
* CRMP – Yellow-billed Cuckoo and Great-crested Flycatcher
* HWR – Prairie Warblers and Yellow-breasted Chats
* Yuchi - Prairie Warblers, Yellow-breasted Chats, 1 Wild Turkey, 3
Mallards, 1 Wood Duck, and numerous Black and Turkey vultures. Many of the
vultures were circling or feeding in grain fields (winter wheat ?) mowed
earlier this week. One prey that I saw was a large rat.
* Home - Purple Martins calling while flying over my property before
daylight this morning. I don’t have any resident Purple Martins. Were they
feeding in the dark?
