Birders, This has to do with interesting bird behavior. Yesterday afternoon, my next-door neighbor called me to come see her strange wood pecker. I went over carrying my binos. Her husband had placed a 6'x 1 1/2" board in the ground to support a small fruit tree in their backyard. I had noticed three carpenter bee holes in the board several days before and had explained how the holes got there to their five children. The Hairy Wood Pecker was stitting on the board and eating from each hole in the board. This process took the better part of an hour! After he left, I examined the holes and discovered the Hairy had enlarged each hole on the outside. The Hairy family lives near by and I see them on a daily basis. I found this behavior most interesting. Linda V.
