I decided to check Nashville's Centennial Park for the GREEN HERON and/or
the BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON which have wintered on the island in the
park's Lake Watauga for at least the last two years. Sure enough, both
birds are there. The Green Heron was out in the open hunting from a low
branch, the Night-heron was preening back in the thick foliage -
obstructed, but easily located with binoculars.
My presumption is these are returning birds. I'd be curious to know if they
are ones which were here in the Summer, or if they are from further North
and this is their destination.
