Cove Lake State Park is just off I-75 - North of Knoxville, in Campbell
County, TN.
Exit mile marker 134 (Caryville, Lafollette) The lake is immediately on
the left.

A GREATER-WHITE FRONTED GOOSE was seen and photographed on Thursday,
1-20-05 at Cove Lake State Park in the company of Canada Geese. This is
my first sighting of the species here in the past 6 1/2 years. He was
fairly approachable.
Have not posted any Winter reports from Cove Lake this year, so will do
so now. Up until the past week, there has been very little waterfowl
this winter. Numbers of ducks have very much declined at this park over
the past 3 years. I truly believe this is due in part to the Mute Swan
that showed up 3 years ago, wild, and has made the lake his residence. He
relentlessly chases every "new" or wild duck that arrives. He has finally
"accepted" the Mallards and domestic species, however, still harasses
them or anything else in his pathway whenever in the mood.

The highlight the past 2 weeks have been the 2 ADULT BALD EAGLES. They
were first seen on 11-14-04. (Surely, they must be nesting nearby. The
pair has been seen being very "affectionate this week) Of course,
their presence is another reason that duck numbers are down. If you go
look for the Eagles, (which are seen more often on the coldest mornings
before 10:00 am) look and see which side of the lake the ducks and coots
are on. They will tell you the Eagle's location if they are around. Scan
the tree tops on the opposite side from where they are located.
The past week the lake has been rather active with over 50 Hooded
Mergansers present, as well as 8-10 Ring-Necked Ducks, Coots.
Approximately 50 Ring-Billed Gulls are around. Other birds of interest at
Cove this winter have been Red-Breasted Nuthatch, and American Pipits
occasionally. There was also a Kestrel present in December.

Blessings,

Nell Moore
