Today at the Rock Quarry on the Harpeth Woods Trail at Warner Park I heard much
commotion from a pair of great crested flycatchers. I spied them in one of two
dead trees as I looked out from the trail above the quarry. One bird was
returning to the tree with nesting material in its bill while another followed
close behind, empty-billed. While the bird with the material disappeared into a
cavity the other bird stood watch. When the first bird reappeared and flew off,
the second bird followed, but soon both were back--one coming in first with
nesting material followed by the second, who once again was contributing only
moral support. This continued for several cycles. I understand both male and
female help build the nest, but one seemed to be doing most of the work in this
case.
