Gray-cheeked Thrushes have been persistently singing and calling in the yard (w. Nashville) since last Sunday. A few minutes ago, a couple were singing, and I decided to listen to a taped call of a Bicknell's Thrush for comparison purposes. I found it interesting that both of the singing birds immediately came in and acted very agitated. One was bill-wiping (a displacement behavior) so furiously that I thought it was going to hurt itself. There has been a lot of discussion about the validity of this split, and, while it's not uncommon for sibling species to respond to calls of their sister taxa, it's pretty suggestive to me from such a strong response from a sympatric species that perhaps the split should be revisited. In other news, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks are threatening to eat us into bankruptcy. We've had as many as 7 on the trey feeder at one time, and countless more around the yard. We went through like 30 pounds of seed last week, which is pretty amazing for just one and a half feeders.
