Gilbert Derouen, Reece Jamerson and Bryan Stevens birded on Tuesday, March 7, at different locations in Sullivan County. We found 12 species of ducks plus grebes, Canada Geese and other water birds. Also one Eastern Phoebe. From top of South Holston Dam: Double-crested Cormorant, 1; and Ring-billed Gulls. Rooty Branch Road- Eastern Phoebe. Musick's Campground- Pied-billed, Eared and Horned Grebes. Middlebrook Lake: Common Mergansers (1 drake, 3 hens) Horned Grebe- 1 Pied-billed Grebe- 1 Belted Kingfisher- 2 Great Blue Heron- 2 Redhead- 2 (drake & hen) Bufflehead (1 drake) Coot- 20+ Ring-necked Duck- 13 Gadwall- 6 Hooded Merganser- 74 Mallards Canada Geese Ring-billed Gulls Mute Swan (2 in private pond next to lake) Later, at monthly Lee & Lois Herndon Chapter TOS meeting, Brookie and Jean Potter reported seeing 100+ Ring-necked Ducks on Wilbur Lake, Carter Co., TN, as well as Redheads and Buffleheads. They also had additional Redheads, American Wigeons and 1 Red-breasted Merganser on Watauga River at Rasar's Farm near Elizabethton. I am not sure, but the 100 Ring-necked Ducks on Wilbur sounds like it could be a high count for that lake.
