Viewing conditions at Rankin Bottoms today were ideal, and should stay that way through the weekend. The Bottoms Road was driveable, and there were wet mudflats and clear shallows for nearly a mile alongside, with mixed clusters of shorebirds along the way, the 2 GODWITS feeding together, the AVOCET nearby and 12 Northern Shovelers in the opposite slow stream, a BLACK TERN gracefully skimming the water. We drove on to the Gate Pond ( just past the gate at the end of the Bottoms Road) and found a RED KNOT, foraging in the cockleburs with some Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs. There also was a flock of over 100 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS In a farther pool . After we left for Harriman, Scott Somershoe and David Kirshke both report seeing 2 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES. Also: Semi-palmated plover (20) Black-bellied Plover (5) White-rumped Sandpipers (5) Baird's Sandpiper Peeps 60+, 10 or 12 Western Sandpipers Stilt Sandpiper (10) Short-billed dowitcher (5) Wilson's Phalarope Michael Sledjeski & Leslie Gibbens Del Rio TN On Sep 8, 2011, at 11:39 AM, Richard Knight wrote: > 8 Sep 2011 > Rankin Bottoms, Cocke Co., TN > > > Michael Sledjeski just called to say that both godwits (Hudsonian > & Marbled) are still present this morning.
