October 6th, 2018
I birded a little by myself between Pace Point in Henry County to the
Duck River Unit in Humphrey's to home in Perry County. I had originally
thought I might do a full scale big day and go to Memphis for the evening,
but a bad flat tire at noon made me change plans and spend the afternoon
relaxing.
Among the highlights was an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and 7
FRANKLIN'S GULLS recently arrived at Pace Point and resting with the Gull
group there. 3 GWTE and 2 Gadwalls there were the only waterfowl besides
Wood Duck that I saw all day.
A GREATER YELLOWLEGS at Lick Creek was the only non-killdeer shorebird.
All shorebird habitat was still flooded.
Pool 7 at the Duck River Unit had multiple SEDGE and MARSH WRENS, a
continuing NELSON'S SPARROW, a SORA and an AMERICAN BITTERN as well as a
DICKCISSEL and several BOBOLINKS.
I had a slightly late male GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER in my yard for Warbler
#15 and species #105 for the day overall. (I should have had 120 species if
I had gotten the usual shorebirds and waterfowl that would be expected at
the pits).
Not on global big day, but the previous day (October 5th) I had an adult
LAUGHING GULL and 2 adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS with several hundred
Ring-billed and Herring Gulls at Pickwick Dam in Hardin County.
