Just before dusk Robert Foehring and I found a young Glaucous Gull in the
massive gull roost out in Reelfoot Lake. There were easily 10,000 gulls on the
water at dusk, with more steadily coming in. We had birded the lake all day,
and didn't see the Glaucous before the roost, and also didn't see the Little
Gull Mark Greene had found just a few days before. A bit of luck might be
necessary. If you come for the roost, the best area is the boardwalk in the
cypress behind the State Visitor Center (Ellington Hall). The birds are fairly
distant, and as the most activity is in the few minutes before dark, a premium
scope will be most helpful if you happen to have one (pretty much no shot with
just binoculars). We aslo had a Barn Swallow at Keystone, otherwise most of the
expected waterbirds but no other surprises.
Good Birding!!
